Sedation for nervous patients

Any person who has a fear of dental treatment is likely to benefit from sedation dentistry.

If you have not seen a dentist for many years and are fearful of the amount of treatment you may need sedation may be the answer for it allows a number of procedures to be performed in a single session.

It can also be useful for people with a strong gag reflex or those who require particularly lengthy or difficult procedures such as implants or oral surgery.

What does it involve?

You are conscious throughout the treatment and are able to communicate but you will feel a lot more relaxed about what is being done.

The medication is usually administered through an injection in your arm and it is a much safer alternative to a general anaesthetic.

You can eat normally on the day of your appointment but you must avoid alcoholic drinks.

You can take routine medication as normal unless advised not to by your dentist.

A responsible adult must accompany you to your appointment, escort you home and supervise you for the next 24hrs.

Wherever possible you should travel home by private car or taxi rather than public transport.

Sedation treatments are only available by private arrangement.
